Get to Know the Code (of Conduct)

July 15th, 7-9pm
@ St. Michael’s Printshop, 72 Harbour Drive
(In-person and Online event)

Join SMP and guest speaker Santiago Guzmán for an evening of conversation about the importance of creating safer spaces and what the Code of Conduct means for SMP. The Code of Conduct came as a step towards goals to diversify, which SMP has long held but not yet delivered on, through discussions held by the Anti-Oppression Committee in 2020.
As part of our work towards creating a more inclusive community space, this event invites Santiago to speak about what he has worked through in order to create safer spaces in the arts in NL, Todos, and other organizations, advocacy work and experiences.
Santiago Guzmán is a writer, performer, and director for theatre and film from Mexico City, now based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. He holds a BFA in Theatre from Memorial University, Grenfell Campus. It is in Santiago’s keen interest to promote diversity onstage and onscreen, to encourage folks with diverse backgrounds to share their talents and stories with the arts community in Newfoundland and Labrador, but most importantly exhort Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to see their homeland with a diverse perspective. Santiago is the Artistic Director of “TODOS Productions: Theatre and Film for All”, an organization that seeks to promote, produce, and support the work of under-represented artists in Newfoundland and Labrador. Although Santiago might have arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador by ‘accident’, it was this place who pushed him to honour and celebrate his essence and allowed him to be the man and artist he is today. His work is very brown, very queer, and very real.”
