Ericka Walker was born in Hartford, Wisconsin, USA. She currently lives and works in Halifax, NS, Canada. Walker’s current body of work is driven by her research into late-19th/early-20th century lithographic propaganda posters. She is captivated by the push-pull of anonymity and individualism that propaganda elicits in its viewers. Walker self-consciously occupies this uncertain personal space by subverting otherwise heroic visual and textual language. Her lithographs – hardly vehicles for the straightforward directives and political dictates expected of propaganda – are instead the vulnerable, nostalgically romantic residue left over from trying to make sense of our best and worst parts at the same time.
